Harmony Friends Church

Harmony Friends Church is located three miles north of Greenup on route 130 and west one -fourth mile.

The Church had its beginning in the Lost Creek log school house about 1870. In 1876, a new building was built with Isaac Stirewalt and Andrew Jackson Carr as carpenters. It was built one - half mile north by Peach Orchard Cemetery. The new building was shared by the Quakers and the Methodist families in the community. A few years later, the two congregations together built the Asbury church. The Methodists moved into the new building.

The Harmony Friends Church was part of the Pleasant Grove Quarterly Meeting and the Plainsfield, Indiana, Western Yearly Meeting.

The first sermon preached was the funeral of Joel Williams who died November 29, 1876. Naming the church Harmony due to the harmony of the people at that time has been attributed to this man.

In 1929 the old church was torn down and in June 1930 the present building was dedicated by Richard Newby, superintendent of the Western Yearly Meetings. this building was free of all debt.

Some of the pastors of the church were Cyrus Moon, Elwood Lewis, Charles High, Danny Wykew, Earnest Kivett, George Jordan, Clarence Ozier, Edith Hill and Lee Guyer.

Unfortunately the Quaker church was "laid down" because of lack of membership. The cemetery is still a very popular resting place for many of the original members, families and descendents. At this time the church is not being used.

When I was a child (in the 1960's) I attended this church. At that time Madge and Lewis Carroll, Champ and Mayme Stewart, Lissa, Lois and Erma Winnett, Margaret and Kathy Baldridge, Reece and Rocine Wakefield and myself were the regular attendees.

Peach Tree Cemetery (Harmony Cemetery)

There was an Indian burial ground on the the top of the hill. When the early settlers began to bury their dead, they used the slope of the hill and the Indian Graves were not disturbed. This cemetery was called the Free Indian Graveyard. It was origianlly called Peach Blossom or Peach tree Cemetery because of the many peach trees scattered on the hillside. After the church was built the cemetery became known as the Harmony cemetery.

This is beautiful cemetery and is very well kept. Many members of our family (Carrs) are buried there. Here is a partial list of our family buried there. More information on these people can be found in my family files.
